JULY 28, 2023/10 MUHARRAM, 1445 A.H. |
The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut extends solemn greetings of peace to everyone on the occasion of the blessed day of Ashura, the tenth day of the first month of the Islamic calendar. This is a day of remembrance of Husayn ibn Ali عليه السلام, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who was martyred on the plain of Karbala by the army of the Caliph Yazid along with 72 family members, companions, and relatives in the year 680 C.E./61 A.H. This is also a day commemorating the miracle of Allah’s favor on the Prophet Moses عليه السلام and the Israelites’ escape from Pharaoh through the parting of the Red Sea. On this day, we pray for Allah’s peace and blessings to be showered upon all our brothers and sisters in faith and in humanity, especially those suffering calamities and oppression. May Allah be pleased with the prayers, devotions, fasting, and good deeds of all who observe Ashura in the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate. Note on Arabic expressions: There are honorifics that Muslims customarily use in referring to the prophets and family of the Prophet Muhammad. عليه السلام, means “upon him peace,” an honorific for prophets and members of the Prophet’s family. ﷺ means “may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him,” an honorific for the Prophet Muhammad. |
