Shelter Serve program at Mercy Shelter, Hartford
On the first Saturday of each month at 11:30am, the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut coordinates a food shelter serve in Hartford. Volunteers cook, prepare, and serve food to those experiencing homelessness.
Upcoming volunteer opportunities:
The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut works with Hands on Hartford to provide Halal food to the needy. Part of our work with Hands on Hartford is to provide training to the staff and volunteers about Islam and Muslims so that they are better able to serve their Muslim clients, With a grant from Islamic Relief USA we are able to provide families with milk, eggs, fresh produce and Halal meat. Each year we receive around 3,000 lbs of Halal meat to distribute to those in need for Eid ul Adha from Islamic Relief USA.
Walk Against Hunger
Each year we support Foodshare’s Walk Against Hunger with our Muslims Against Hunger – the “We Care Team!” Foodshare is the regional food bank serving Connecticut’s Hartford and Tolland counties, where more than 119,000 people struggle with hunger. Our walkers have raised over $20,000 over the years for this cause.
Turkey Distribution at Thanksgiving
Each year MCCT joins Hands on Hartford in their Turkey Distribution for Thanksgiving. This year we received a special grant from Islamic Relief USA to provide Halal turkeys to those who needed them.
National Day of Service
The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut participates in the annual National Day of Service by hosting various a towel drives collecting new bath towels for area shelters in Connecticut. We collect towels from MLK day until February when we deliver them to area shelters.
In the first week of December we distribute winter items such as winter gloves, hats, socks, scarves and blankets to the needy. We also provide these and sleeping bags, towels and wipes to those who are homeless. If you would like to donate toward this initiative, let us know!
Special Events Planning
We help arrange special events to bring people from diverse faiths in the community together. An example of an event was bringing women together to bake bread and share their experiences.
